A figura de Santo António como ícone transcultural vive na memória colectiva, deixando de ser o santo de Lisboa ou de Pádua para ser o santo de todo o mundo. A sua imagem circula por todos os continentes e continua a absorver novas características, integrando-se de acordo com as especificidades das pessoas e dos lugares. Veja-se, por exemplo o processo de miscigenação que a sua imagem alcança nas culturas sul-americanas, onde chegou pela mão de portugueses e de espanhóis. Importa para este estudo, conhecer a imagem de Santo António projectada na literatura, na cultura e nas tradições da zona transfronteiriça que une a Extremadura espanhola com o Alto Alentejo e a Beira Baixa em Portugal. 

The identity of Saint Anthony as a transcultural icon lives in the communal memory in such a way that he is no longer merely the saint of Lisbon or Padua but a saint of all the world. His image circulates around all continents and it is still absorbing new features, integrating itself according to the specificities of the people and places where the saint is culted. That is what happened with the miscegenation his representation took among the South American cultures, where it arrived by the action of Portuguese and Spanish discoverers. The objective of the present study is to acknowledge the representation of Saint Anthony held by the literature, culture and traditions of the border area that adjoins the Spanish Extremadura and the Portuguese Alto Alentejo and Beira Baixa.
