Synopsis

Among the Extremaduran varieties, Spanish from Olivenza stands out as rather peculiar, not only because of how late it was formed, but also by the significant Portuguese transfers which can be discovered in it. Hence, it is surprising that, until this time, only the synchrony of this Spanish has been analyzed and that none have addressed a linguistic study to the 19th century documentation from this locality and, in turn, of its origins. The work at hand seeks to provide more data about how Spanish from Olivenza was formed by way of an analysis of this documentation. Thus, an analysis of the lexical lusisms present in said corpus will be carried out so as to appreciate the importance of Portuguese in the creation of this variety of Spanish and, more specifically, in the idiosyncrasies it presents on this linguistic level. Keywords: History of the Spanish language, linguistic contact, Olivenza, 19th. century, lexicon, lusism.
