This work presents a set of documents of interest for the history of Badajoz and other cities of similar characteristics in the transition from the Middle Age to the Modern Age. They refer to the municiple ordinances that prevailed at least during the first decades of the sixteenth century, considered the “Old Ordinances” in 1535, when the representatives of the council proposed to the Royal Council of Castile the approval of new, rather more extensive regulations. From the information in these documents, and the data provided from the rents of the sales tax, we aim to analyse the basic characteristics of production and trade in this city. These were still dominated by the considerable weight of the farming sector, but now open to a more intense and diversified exchange with Portugal and with other Castilian centres of trade.
