La línea fronteriza entre España y Portugal, conocida también como la Raya, es uno de los confines interestatales más antiguos que existen. Sus más de mil doscientos kilómetros de longitud la han convertido en un espacio de encuentro y confluencia de lenguas y variedades, cuya demarcación no siempre coincide con los límites de la frontera administrativa y política actual. Esa franja de división, pero también de convergencia, que supone la Raya ha ido acumulando durante siglos un importante patrimonio lingüístico, histórico y cultural, cuya huella puede seguirse a través de su toponimia. Los topónimos «rayanos», testimonio vivo de su historia, son, en realidad, un patrimonio en sí mismo y han de ser protegidos y estudiados. Se ofrece aquí una panorámica general de dichos topónimos, sin perder el detalle en algunos focos de interés, y se revisan algunas de las principales cuestiones que estos plantean. The frontier separating Spain and Portugal, also known as la Raya, is one of the oldest interstate boundaries that exist. Its length of more than two hundred kilometres has made it a meeting point and confluence of language varieties, whose demarcation does not always coincide with the present-day political and administrative boundaries. This area of separation, but also convergence, created by la Raya, has accumulated over the centuries a considerable linguistic, historical and cultural heritage, which has left its mark on the local place names. The place names along the border, which bear witness to its history, are in fact a legacy in itself, which should be protected and studied. We offer here an overview of these names, while at the same time referring to details where appropriate, and we revisit some of the principal issues that they have given rise to. Key words: toponymy, Raya (border), frontier, Spain.
