The Roman province of Lusitania stretched across large portions of modern Portugal and Spain. Historically, the political division between these countries has prevented a holistic approach to the study of Roman Lusitania. Moreover, many recent publications relating to Lusitania are collections of smaller studies that focus on specific areas of Lusitania, or geographically limited aspects of the culture and history of the province. In the last three decades of the 20th century, the archaeological picture of the area of ancient Lusitania has improved significantly. This is due in part to increased activity in the Roman province among Portuguese and Spanish scholars, as well as a growing interest in Lusitania as a western province among the international community. As a result, many of the small villages of Portugal and Spain have seen increased archaeological activity, and the publication of unprecedented numbers of Roman sites has substantially improved the overall picture of Lusitania. This project represents a synthesis of the available archaeological, historical, and epigraphic evidence from Lusitanian cities during the first century of the Roman Empire.
