El objeto de esta investigación es conocer la evolución que ha sufrido la población rural salmantina a lo largo del siglo XX. El fenómeno de la diáspora ha hecho que la provincia haya perdido un capital humano muy importante; como consecuencia de ello, se han producido una serie de cambios sociales y desequilibrios en la estructura de la población rural: disminución en el factor humano y un alto índice de envejecimiento. A la vez, esa disminución en el factor humano ha hecho que a lo largo de toda la centuria se produjera una progresiva desaparición de municipios, a lo que han contribuido factores muy diversos.

The aim of the present work was to gain insight into the development of the rural population of the province of Salamanca (Spain) along the twentieth century. The phenomenon of Diaspora led to province to lose a large part of its human resources. As a result, a series of social changes and imbalances in the structure of the rural populations emerged: a decrease in the birth rate and a high aging index. In turn, this decrease in human resources has meant that, owing to diverse factors, throughout the last century many municipalities progressively disappeared.
