Este estudo sobre o xénero do substantivo está baseado na fala do concello ourensán de Castrelo do Val. Nel, deféndese que o xénero en galego é un clasificador que divide os substantivos en dous tipos: masculino e feminino. Faise referencia ó xénero do indoeuropeo e do latín. Constátase que a marcaxe do xénero no galego desta zona non é sempre previsible, a pesar de que a categoría de xénero ten unha marcaxe formal con -o e con -a moito máis recoñecible para os falantes galegos cá marcaxe do xénero en latín para os falantes latinos. Por último, demóstrase que a variación xenérica masculino/ feminino vale para categorizar como distintas dúas entidades distintas que, fundamentalmente, teñen unha feitura diferente e, como consecuencia desa forma diferente, tamén teñen funcións distintas, distinto tamaño, etc. A análise dunha fala concreta é extrapolable a todo o galego. This study on noun gender focuses on the Galician speech of Castrelo do Val (Ourense). I argue that in Galician, gender is a classifier that divides nouns into two types: masculine and feminine. Special reference is made to gender in Indo-European and Latin. I prove that gender marking in the Galician spoken in this area is not always predictable, although gender has a formal marking with -o or -a endings much more evident than gender marking was for Latin speakers. Finally, I demonstrate that the generic variation masculine/feminine is used to categorise as different two entities that mainly have a different shape and, consequently, different function, size, etc. The analysis of a particular speech can be extrapolated to Galician as a whole.
