La actual población de Jerez de los Caballeros fue donada por el rey Enrique II a la Orden de Santiago en diciembre de 1370, sin embargo la villa de “Xerez cerca Badajoz” no entró a formar parte del señorío santiaguista hasta junio de 1371. En este trabajo profundizamos en los motivos que tuvo el rey para tal donación, en las razones que hubo para tal retraso, en los detalles de la toma de posesión por parte del maestre Fernando Osórez, y en las mercedes que éste concedió a la villa. Todo ello sin olvidar el contexto políticomilitar del momento, situación que afectó directamente a la tenencia del castillo jerezano.
