With this study we intended to analyze the “Guadramilese” and the “Riodeonorese” in an historic and social-linguistic perspective, not forgetting some phonological particularities. These two languages of Astur-Leonese descendant, belonging to the Portuguese territory, are situated on the Northeast of Portugal, near to the Spanish border. Along with the “Mirandese”, these are the only non-Galician-Portuguese languages of the national territory which is, in the opinion of several specialists, a linguistic space of remarkable unity (Boléo & Silva, 1962, Maia, 1992). Telmo Verdelho (1993), considers that these languages are extinct since the middle of the last century and that currently they are only a faint linguistic memory completely vanished. However, with this study, we intend to show that even though these languages are spoken by a small portion of speakers, they continue to be a part of the cultural and linguistic heritage of those who, proudly, use them as their identity mark. During our study, we could verify that these two languages are still used by some of the Riodonor and Guadramil inhabitants, even though in private or informal situations. We believe, according to our respondents and to our own opinion, that we still have time to save these languages which should continue to be learned in family environment. In fact, one language can only be abandoned by their own speakers and, in our investigation it was quite demonstrated that Riodonor and Guadramil population don’t seem to want to abandon their linguistic identity consecrated by the centuries. Keywords: Riodonorese; Guadramilese; social-linguistics; minority languages.
