O trabalho aborda de forma abrangente a temática do contrabando, na fronteira lusoespanhola da região do Baixo Guadiana, delimitada por este importante rio da Península Ibérica que representa o espaço físico que estabelece a fronteira política entre as regiões portuguesas, geograficamente mais a sul – a do Algarve junto à foz e do Baixo Alentejo a montante- e a província de Huelva, parte da comunidade autonómica da Andaluzia, em Espanha. O trabalho incide, num primeiro momento, sobre a análise da geografia e os factores dinâmicos sociais, políticos e económicos que caracterizam uma fronteira com quase novecentos anos de história. Proceder-se-á ainda à contextualização da complexa dinâmica humana do contrabando, e em concreto da primeira metade do século XX, enquanto resposta às duras condições existentes, recorrendo a relatos orais de intervenientes no processo, e enfatizar-se-á as duras vivências que levaram fontes históricas e jornalísticas a classificarem esta área como a fronteira da fome e do medo. The monograph now presented, extensively details the smuggling (“contrabando”) phenomena on the Portugal-Spain border, limited by the Guadiana River, one of the most important rivers of the Iberian Peninsula. Specifically the study emphasizes the Lower Guadiana (Baixo Guadiana) region, border´s area of the southern Portuguese regions of Algarve and Baixo Alentejo, with the autonomic community of Spain, Andalucia. The monograph detaches, on a first approach, by the geographic analysis of the region and the dynamics according to social, political and economic history, during almost nine hundred years. As one of the most valuable elements on the study, the second part of it establish the complexity of the human character of the smuggling dynamics, and specifically according to the smugglers activity developed during the first half of 20th. Century. The clash of the visions and action between Smuggling intervenients and the Law Enforcement agencies of both countries, will be revealed on the oral narratives contrasted by some newspapers and historical sources, and culture´s expression elements.
