[Resumen extraído de la fuente original]

The long-standing social, political, economic and cultural contacts along the Spanish-Portuguese and Uruguayan-Brazilian borders have led to the development of two mixed dialects. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the two apparently similar language contact situations between Spanish and Portuguese that have given rise to fronterizo, spoken on the vast border zone between Uruguay and Brazil, and barranqueño, spoken in the small town of Barrancos, located on the south-east Portuguese border with Spain. The analysis probes into their most salient features to verify whether such similar situations of contact have produced identical linguistic outcomes. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The introduction identifies the scope of the research. The first chapter presents the theoretical approach, the methodological procedures and the data. The next chapter examines the two language contact situations from historical, social and cultural perspectives. The third chapter compares and contrasts the two mixed dialects in their phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical features. The analysis identifies the extent to which this contact affects the system of the languages involved, and observes the similarities and differences between the dialects in comparison to some other Portuguese and Spanish dialects and Portuguese-based Creoles. The final chapter argues that the new linguistic formations are fully developed mixed dialects in active everyday use. Both language contact situations are the result of intense bilingualism, which has affected and shaped the new mixed dialects. We conclude that despite the comparable historical, social, cultural and linguistic contexts, the two similar language contact situations have induced unique changes in the system of the languages involved, creating two very similar but not identical mixed dialects.
