Neste artigo pretendemos dar a conhecer os costumes e foros dos concelhos portugueses —Guarda, Santarém, Évora e Beja—, na Idade Média (séculos XIII-XIV). Por outro lado, analisaremos estas fontes de direito consuetudinário, colocando algumas questões que ainda hoje se encontram em aberto, tais como as origens das normativas. Por último, destacamos a importância e as potencialidades de estudo dos códigos de costumes e foros, sobretudo para o conhecimento da organização e das sociedades municipais. Palabras clave: Concelhos; Costumes e Foros; Idade Média; Portugal; Séculos XIII-XIV.

In this article, we intend to make know the customary and laws of the Portuguese medieval town councils —Guarda, Santarém, Évora and Beja—, in de Middle Age (13th and 14th Centuries). On the other hand, we will analyse this sources of the common law, placing some questions which are still open today, for example the origins of rules. By last, recognized the importance and the potential of study this customary and laws codes, especially for the knowledge of organization and local societies. Key words 13th and 14th Centuries, Customs and Law, Middle Age, Portugal, Town Councils.
