This study is an analysis of the memorial contribution underlying the formulation and subsequent enforcement of the 15 th century decrees which established the Portugue se borderline. The author stresses the fact that the “negotiable aspect” intrinsic to the latter is not incompatible with the pre sence of a “refer ential instance” in the former. The performative aspect characterising the history of the process of defining the frontier is also analysed in this text.
