El Segundo Regimiento de Infantería de Olivenza fue una unidad perteneciente a la estructura del ejército regular portugués de primera línea, que nace en Olivenza durante el conflicto de la Guerra de la Restauración (1640- 1668), y que va a permanecer aquí, junto con el Primer Regimiento de Infantería y el Regimiento de Caballería “Dragões de Olivença”, formando parte de la guarnición permanente de la plaza, hasta 1800. El presente artículo pretende mostrarnos una imagen de estas tropas en aquellos difíciles años de final del siglo XIX, a través de diferentes aspectos de su día a día. The Second Infantry Regiment of Olivenza was a unit belonging to the structure of the regular army of the Portuguese first line, born in Olivenza during the conflict of the War of Restoration (1640-1668), and you are going to stay here, together with the First Regiment of Infantry and Cavalry Regiment “Dragões of Olivença” forming part of the permanent garrison of the place, until his departure at the end of September of the year 1800. The present article aims to show us an image of these troops in those difficult years at the end of the nineteenth century, through different aspects of your day to day. The mountainous Northeastern region of the Algarve in Southern Portugal has been generally depicted in negative tones, as characterized by poverty, unfeasible landholdings, irrational or individualist farming practices, and rural exodus. A series of bizarre elements appears to be both symptom and cause of the supposed demise of agriculture (desertificação), grating the area an aura suggestive of a barren wasteland. Nevertheless, extensive fieldwork within the zone's typically minuscule settlements (montes) comprising rarely more than a dozen domestic groups confirms that agriculture continues, that the local population has not vanished, and that the latter lack such a "catastrophic" vision of their future. Rather than an impediment to modernization, this extreme example of the excessive subdivision and fragmentation of land can be seen as a consistent and rational form of ecological adaptation favouring continued residence and cultivation. Equal partition does not therefore constitute some kind of pathological application of an abstract rule, but instead a locally recognized and respected form of division coherently linked to a highly diversified agrarian system of polyculture. The rural household is not viewed as an enduring structure to be preserved through the generations - much greater value is placed on the distribution to ali heirs of a multiplicity of dispersed fields. A História de Portugal e a História de Espanha estão profundamente ligadas ao longo dos séculos. Com um passado comum anterior às definições de fronteiras políticas que só terminarão, no fundamental, nos finais do século XV, com a formação da Espanha moderna, as relações peninsulares foram complexas, alternando períodos de grande aproximação -tratados, causas comuns e casamentos reais- com outros de confronto que não me repugna classificar de fratricida. No entanto, na época contemporânea, assistimos a uma evolução desse paralelismo que, com algumas descontinuidades, se revela aliciante para o historiador. Nesta comunicação analisaremos os processou de implantação do liberalismo em Portugal e Espanha desde 1808 até 1839, tomando como balizas cronológicas o início da Guerra Peninsular ou Guerra da Independência e o final da I Guerra carlista. Procuraremos determinar as coincidências e dissemelhanças entre os dois processos, nos quais se detecta uma inegável interacção.

The History of Portugal and the History of Spain have been deeply linked during two centuries. With a common past previous to the drawing of political frontiers which will finish, fundamentally, at the end of the 15th century, with the formation of a modern Spain, the peninsular relations were complex, alternating between periods of big approximation – treaties, common causes and royal weddings – with others of confrontation which can be classified as fratricidal. However, in present times, we now witness an evolution of such a parallellism which, with certain irregularities, shows itself very attractive for the historian. In our essay we will analyse the process of the implantation of liberalism in Spain and Portugal from 1808 to 1839, taking as chronological beacons the beginning of the War of Independence and the ending of the First Carlist War. We will try to determine the coincidences and differences between both processes, in which one can detect a clear interaction.

Los siglos XIV-XV suponen para Extremadura el inicio de un complejo proceso de cambios políticos, sociales y económicos de profundas repercusiones. Derivado de esta realidad, arranca uno de los fenómenos que más incidencia tuvo en el conjunto territorial y estructural de Extremadura: la señorialización de espacios realengos. En el caso extremeño, la señorialización se desarrolla desde dos ámbitos, el que protagonizan las grandes familias nobiliarias y el que desarrollan las oligarquías locales.
