En este trabajo se plantea la existencia de diversas etapas en la evolución de la frontera luso-castellana en la Edad Media, y la necesidad de estudiar los cambios y problemas que se observan también después del Tratado de Alcañices. En concreto, se definen tres épocas sucesivas: la de las conquistas, la de los tratados y la de las “contiendas”, cada una con características propias, pero se analiza con mayor énfasis la última por ser la de mayor duración y porque, frente a una idea muy extendida, la frontera conoció entonces importantes cambios tanto en su sentido como en las repercusiones que ejerció en la sociedad, en la economía, en el paisaje y hasta en la toponimia de la zona.

This article shows that there are several stages in the evolution of the medieval border between Portugal and Castilla, because there were significant changes and problems after the Alcañices peace treaty. Specifically, we will study three different and consecutive periods: that of conquest, that of pacts and that of controversies, each one with specific traits. We analyse the later period with special attention because it takes up more time and because, to the contrary people think, the border supported then important changes in their functions and in the influence that affected the society, the economy, the landscape and even over the toponymy.
