La provincia de Salamanca, limítrofe con Portugal, fue parte importante del escenario de la guerra de Sucesión al trono de España, que al principio del XVIII disputaban Felipe de Anjou y el Archiduque Carlos de Austria. A la causa dinástica se unieron motivos religiosos y de defensa de los fueros. Ciudad Rodrigo y Salamanca, las dos únicas ciudades de la provincia, resultaron dominadas por el ejército invasor de portugueses, ingleses y holandeses, los aliados. Les resistieron los soldados de Francia y España juntamente con las milicias populares. La mayoría de nuestros pueblos sufrieron enormemente por el alojamiento de las tropas, los robos y los destrozos. Igualmente todas las poblaciones tuvieron que soportar tributos extraordinarios, y en varios casos concertar el pago de una cantidad para no caer prisioneros o librarse de la muerte.

The province of Salamanca, bordering Portugal, played an important part as being the location of the war of Succession to the Spanish throne. Which, at the beginning of the eighteenth century was being disputed by Felipe of Anjou and Archduke Carlos of Austria. The reasons for this dynastic conflict were both religions and in defense of the dynastic laws. Ciudad Rodrigo and Salamanca, the only two cities in the province, were consequently dominated by the invading Portuguese, English and Dutch armies, the allies . The French and Spanish soldiers together with the popular militias put up a strong defense. The majority of our towns suffered immensely form having to provide lodgings for the troops and from robbery and destruction. Equaly the towns had to pay enormous taxes, and in several cases were forced to pay large amounts of money so as not to fall prisioner or to scape death.
